Paper Grades, section 0601

A number of you (particularly from the 8:00 am class) have emailed me about grades. Unfortunately, I am still grading the papers. I have not responded to you individually because I've been focused on trying to get the grading finished. I won't be done until this evening at the earliest. Sorry.

Exam Guide and Other Stuff

I will not be producing a study guide for the final because the old exams are the best possible study guide.

The exam will have 50 multiple choice questions.

Exam 3 now in the class documents

I strongly recommend that you focus on the midterm exams as you study for the final.

You can now find an exam 3 guide among the documents for this class. This is a list of things to focus on; it is not comprehensive.

Crime Slides

Some of you have noted that the crime slides are not working properly. To view all of the slides, you need to download the slides to our computer. To do this, point your mouse at the top right-hand corner of the slides in the onedrive folder and click the box that appears. Find the "Download" option at the top of the page and click that. Open the downloaded slides and you will be able to see all slides.

Class Review 9/16

We went quickly today; here's some things to focus on:

1) Give an example of overgeneralization/illogical reasoning/selective observation, etc.
2) Give an example of a mediating variable.
3) Give an example of a spurious relationship.

Book Group

Now that you have selected a book, it can be useful to you to find other people in my two classes that are also reading the book. I encourage you to discuss it with them (I can envision a book club meeting with snacks - in a safe environment, of course). You can use this space to find other people, discuss the book, or organize a get-together. (Comments about the book can count towards your 10.)

Age at Marriage and Divorce

Here's a chart from the CDC (http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/ad/ad323.pdf). I want you to think about what this chart says about marriage and divorce/disruption, and also some of the reasoning pitfalls you might fall in when looking at this chart if you aren't careful.

Lecture Review (9/9)

Here are some things to focus on from today:

0) How are different worldviews/paradigms in sociology like quantum mechanics/general relativity in physics? How are they different?
1) Inductive and deductive reasoning - if I give you an example can you tell the difference?
2) Theory vs. proposition vs. hypothesis. What is the difference between a theory and a proposition? What is the difference between a proposition and a hypothesis?
3) Why don't we "prove" things or identify "truth" in sociology?
4) Be familiar with the steps of the scientific method (the order of the process)?

Y'all are doing a great job with comments. Keep up the good work!

Today's Review

To account for the fact that I can be a bit of a scatterbrain, I will often post a list of key points/questions from lecture to help students know where to focus their studies. You can comment on these/offer answers as part of your 10 comments.

1) What is the point of theory?
2) What is the danger of theory?
3) Comte, Marx, Durkheim, Weber: identify something about them that is unique from the others.
      a) Power/property/prestige
4) What is the most important part of a worldview/paradigm?
5) What are the worldviews we talked about in class?

Intergenerational Mobility

Mean child household income is the average income of children born between 1980-1982 in 2010-2012 (when they are approximately 30 years old). Parent household income is the average income of parents between 1996-2000 (when the children were between 14 and 20 years old). Dollar values are adjusted for inflation so they reflect purchasing power in 2012. Income data comes from tax records.
